NCL's Freestyle Cruising model originated in 2000 as a direct challenge to the fixed-seating, fixed-schedule norms that had defined cruise dining for decades. The concept — guests eat when they want, where they want, at any included restaurant on the ship — was controversial at the time and has since been partially adopted (in spirit if not in name) by most major lines. Norwegian's specialty restaurant program expanded significantly through the 2010s and 2020s, and Aura reflects the current generation of that thinking: multiple specialty venues covering Asian, steakhouse, French, seafood, and Italian concepts, typically bookable as part of Norwegian's Free at Sea promotional bundles. The inclusion model has become the line's primary marketing tool — guests who book with specialty dining credits calculate value differently than guests paying per-cover, which benefits travelers who would eat at specialty restaurants anyway.

The entertainment program on Norwegian ships skews toward Broadway-style productions and headline acts, a programming choice that distinguishes them from Celebrity (which programs classical and jazz) and Royal Caribbean (which programs original productions with a technology emphasis). Norwegian has secured licensing for productions including Kinky Boots, Six, and After Midnight, giving the onboard theater genuine West End and Broadway content.

Norwegian Aura's itinerary mix covers the same geographic range as the rest of the fleet: Caribbean, Bermuda, Alaska, Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. For guests evaluating NCL against other contemporary premium lines at similar price points, Freestyle dining and the entertainment programming are the arguments for choosing Norwegian. The argument against: the ambiance on large NCL ships can feel louder and more informal than Celebrity or HAL for travelers who prefer a quieter evening experience.
