Zuiderdam

Zuiderdam entered service in 2002 as the first Vista-class vessel, and everything that followed — Oosterdam, Westerdam, Eurodam, Noordam — drew on what Zuiderdam proved: that 1,848 guests at sea with 67 percent balcony inventory and dedicated specialty dining could work at the mid-premium price point.

The Dutch art collection is the feature that distinguishes Zuiderdam from its sisters. Holland America commissioned Dutch and Dutch-influenced artists to create works for the ship's public spaces — not reproductions or generics, but commissioned originals. The result is an atrium, corridor system, and public room environment that rewards unhurried attention. Collectors will find depth here; non-collectors will find it a better backdrop than the corporate-art-service aesthetic common on ships in this class.

The core dining and entertainment program mirrors the Vista class: Pinnacle Grill (steakhouse), Tamarind (Asian-Pacific, added in refurbishment), Canaletto (Italian), and the Lido Market. The all-weather Lido Pool retractable-glass system functions well in both Caribbean heat and Mediterranean shoulder-season cooler weather.

Caribbean deployments from Fort Lauderdale are the primary itinerary pattern — seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean circuits appeal to the repeat cruiser who wants the HAL service experience in a warm-weather setting. Mediterranean sailings tend toward longer formats (10-14 nights) for the European summer.

Zuiderdam is the original Vista ship and carries the art collection that none of its sisters matched. For travelers who value that, it's the reason to choose Zuiderdam specifically. For travelers who don't, Oosterdam or Westerdam will deliver the equivalent experience.
