Celebrity Ascent (2023) is the fourth ship in Celebrity's Edge class and, by most accounts, the most polished expression of the design language that began with Celebrity Edge in 2018. The Infinite Veranda — the floor-to-ceiling moveable glass wall that replaces the traditional balcony — has been refined through four ships, and on Ascent the mechanism is faster, the thermal experience is better understood, and the cabin layouts have been adjusted based on what guests actually used. At approximately 3,260 guests, Ascent operates primarily in the Caribbean and Mediterranean.
Celebrity Ascent entered service in November 2023 as the latest in a class that began in 2018 with Celebrity Edge. By the time Ascent was designed, Celebrity had five years of guest feedback on the Edge concept: which features worked exactly as intended, which required reinterpretation, and where the line had overcomplicated something that needed simplifying. The result is a ship that treats the Edge template as a settled proposition rather than an experiment.
The Infinite Veranda — a full glass wall that slides open to blur the boundary between cabin and sea — is better understood on Ascent than on any of its predecessors. Celebrity has refined the insulation, the mechanism, and the guidance around how to use the space. Guests who found the first-generation version counterintuitive or drafty will find the Ascent implementation more straightforward. The cabin itself, with the wall open, becomes something genuinely different from a standard balcony cabin: the outside comes in rather than requiring the guest to step out.
The Retreat — Celebrity's ship-within-a-ship suite tier — occupies the forward upper decks with a private sun deck, pool, lounge, and Luminae restaurant. At its pricing level, The Retreat competes against entry-level ultra-luxury cruise lines (Azamara, Windstar, lower-category Silversea) and often wins on the combination of full-ship amenities plus a private sanctuary. Eden, the three-story glass atrium at the stern with nightly performance programming, is the ship's most singular space and the clearest evidence that Celebrity was thinking about the ship as architecture rather than just a resort at sea.
AquaClass, Celebrity's wellness cabin tier, adds Persian Garden spa access, a dedicated dining room (Blu), and preferred access to the wellness programs. It represents an honest middle ground between standard veranda cabins and The Retreat — worth considering for guests whose trip centers on spa time. The rest of the dining program — Eden, Fine Cut steakhouse, Le Petit Chef dinner experience, the complementary Ocean View Café buffet — is broad without being overwhelming.
The honest note: Celebrity Ascent is not a significant departure from Celebrity Beyond or Celebrity Edge, and guests who have sailed the class recently won't find reinvention. For first-time Edge-class guests, or for guests choosing between the four ships and wanting the most mature implementation, Ascent is the right pick.
