Celebrity Apex (2020) is the second Edge-class ship, arriving two years after Celebrity Edge proved the concept and incorporating feedback from that first sailing season. The Edge-class defining features are present: Infinite Verandas (the movable glass wall that converts the living room into an open-air terrace), The Retreat (an exclusive deck, pool, lounge, and restaurant for suite guests), and Eden (the three-story aft glass atrium with its own dining program and performers). At ~2,910 guests, Apex operates primarily in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
Celebrity Edge launched in 2018 with a design so different from its predecessors that the industry took several months to assess what it actually was. Infinite Verandas — the wall between the cabin and the exterior that can be fully opened, effectively eliminating the barrier between inside and outside — became the most debated design feature in contemporary cruising. Opinions divided along predictable lines: passengers who wanted a traditional balcony found the movable wall confusing; passengers who discovered they could have their coffee inside while fully exposed to the ocean found it transformative.
Celebrity Apex incorporates the operational refinements that followed Edge''s first full year of sailing. Small issues with the Infinite Veranda mechanism, dining flow, and cabin storage were addressed. The result is a ship that feels like the concept was always going to work this way — which is the highest compliment you can pay a second-generation design.
The Retreat is Celebrity''s most expensive and most loyal segment. The dedicated aft deck for Retreat (suite) guests includes a pool, sun deck, lounge, and the Luminae restaurant — a private full-service dining room with a menu that changes daily and isn''t available to non-suite guests. For travelers willing to pay the Retreat premium, the value calculation competes favorably with lower-tier ultra-luxury lines at similar price points: you get the ship''s full amenity access, plus a private tier that functions like a ship-within-a-ship.
Eden — the three-story glass atrium at the stern — functions differently depending on the time of day. At lunch, it''s a restaurant with an ambitious menu. At 11pm, it''s a performance venue where acrobats and dancers work the space in ways that require no stage. Eden has no direct parallel on any other cruise ship; it was either a commercial risk or a design statement, and based on Apex''s booking performance it appears to have been the latter.
