What to Eat
Cooking in the Palatinate, the region Speyer belongs to, is traditionally rich.
- The dish to look for is the Palatinate Trinity (Pfälzer Dreifaltigkeit), which puts three things on one plate of sauerkraut and gravy: liver dumplings, bratwurst and Saumagen.
- Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who is buried in Speyer, regularly served these Palatinate dishes to fellow politicians.

The Cathedral, the Jewish Courtyard and the Museums
Eight German emperors and kings are buried in Speyer Cathedral, a Romanesque basilica.
- The cathedral opens at 9 am from Monday to Saturday and at 11:30 am on Sundays and public holidays. It closes at 7 pm from April to October (5:30 pm on Sundays) and at 5 pm from November to March. The crypt opens half an hour later and closes half an hour earlier.
- The cathedral tower and the Kaisersaal are open from April to October only.
- The Jewish Courtyard (Judenhof) has a ritual bath about 33 feet deep, the oldest of its kind in Germany, and the walls of a medieval synagogue. Adult admission was €5 in October 2026; check before you go.
- The Historical Museum of the Palatinate, on Domplatz, shows the Cathedral Treasure and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Adult admission to its permanent collection was €10.
- The Altpörtel, the old main city gate, is one of the tallest in Germany.
History
Emperor Conrad II founded Speyer Cathedral around 1030, and it was consecrated in 1061.
- The Jewish ritual bath in the Judenhof was built before 1128.
- The lower part of the Altpörtel dates from 1230 to 1250, and its top floor was added between 1512 and 1514.
- The word Protestant goes back to the protest made at the Diet of Speyer in 1529. The Memorial Church, built from 1893 to 1904, commemorates it.
- The Trinity Church was built as a Lutheran church between 1701 and 1717, and the Town Hall between 1712 and 1726.
- The cathedral became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981, the second in Germany, and the Jewish Courtyard followed in 2021.

- The Festplatz parking lot, 200 meters from the museum, has a hard-sand surface that can be difficult for wheelchairs and strollers in bad weather. Three accessible parking spaces are on Große Pfaffengasse, right by the museum.
