What to Expect

Siem Reap lies inland, so ask your cruise line exactly where your boat comes in and how it gets you into town.

  • The Tonlé Sap lake is about 30 minutes south of downtown Siem Reap, at the port of Chong Kneas.
  • Boats reach the town across the Tonlé Sap. Buses run from Phnom Penh, about five hours away, and from Battambang, and the road from the Thai border at Poipet is in good condition.
  • Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport is about 50 km from the city.

Visiting Angkor

You need an Angkor pass for Angkor Wat and the other temples of the Angkor park.

  • A one-day pass was $37 in October 2026. A three-day pass was $62, to be used within seven days, and a seven-day pass was $72, to be used within 30 days. Check before you go.
  • The Angkor temple park is open from 5 am to 6:30 pm.
  • Banteay Srei is covered by the Angkor pass. Phnom Kulen needs its own ticket.
  • Beng Mealea ($10), Kbal Spean ($5) and Koh Ker ($15) are sold as separate one-day tickets and open from 6 am to 6:30 pm.
  • Passes are sold at the Angkor ticket office and online.

History

In the Angkor period, Siem Reap was probably the site of a town called Dvijendrapura.

  • From 1795 to 1907, Siem Reap and the provinces around it were under Siamese rule. In 1907 they passed to French Indochina, and the town began to grow.
  • The Grand Hotel d'Angkor opened in 1929, and Angkor drew large numbers of visitors until civil war kept them away from the late 1960s.
  • In 1975 the Khmer Rouge drove the people of Siem Reap, like those of every Cambodian town, into the countryside.
  • After 1998, calmer times and a revived tourist trade brought the town back to life.

Paying in Dollars and Riel

US dollars are used about as widely as Cambodian riel, and many hotels, restaurants and shops price in dollars.

  • Small purchases are usually paid in riel.
  • Keep some small riel notes for snacks and short rides.
  • Check your change. Even a small tear in a large US note, such as a $20, $50 or $100, can make it impossible to spend.
