What to Expect
Rheinstraße, the road along the river, has landing stages for Rhine passenger boats, and your cruise line confirms where your ship berths.
- The train station is about a 10-minute walk from the Rheinstraße landing stages.
- Drosselgasse, a lane of wine taverns in the old town, is 144 meters long.
- The cable car's lower station is at Oberstraße 37. Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet is on the same street, at the top of Drosselgasse.
Getting Around
The cable car's lower station is within walking distance of both the train station and the passenger-boat jetties.
- A single cable car ride was €7.50 for adults and a return €12 in October 2026. Children aged 5 to 15 paid €3.50 or €6, and children under 5 ride free.
- The cable car does not run all year, and its hours change with the season.
- The cable car stops for a time in strong wind or thunderstorms. Check hours, fares and whether it is running before you go.
- Cable car tickets are also sold from a machine on the forecourt, which saves waiting at the ticket desk.
What to Eat and Drink
Rüdesheim is a wine town, and its wine taverns and garden terraces are on Drosselgasse.
- The vineyards around the town grow Rheingau Riesling.
- Asbach brandy has been made in Rüdesheim since 1892.
- Rüdesheimer Kaffee is a local drink of coffee with Asbach brandy.
Tipping and Currency
Restaurant bills in Germany include tax and service, and a tip of about 10 percent is common.
- Germany's currency is the euro, and bank cash machines work around the clock.
- Major credit cards are widely accepted in Germany, and the cable car's ticket office takes cash and cards.
- Prices shown in German shops and restaurants include taxes.
The Niederwald Monument, Drosselgasse and the Music Cabinet
The Niederwald Monument stands above the vineyards, and the cable car from the town goes up to it.
- The Niederwald Monument was finished in 1883.
- Drosselgasse, a narrow cobblestone lane that dates from the 15th century, has live music in its taverns through the summer.
- Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet is a collection of mechanical musical instruments in the Brömserhof, a 15th-century knight's residence. Visits are by guided tour only; the tour takes 45 minutes and runs daily between 10 am and 5 pm.
- The Music Cabinet tour was €12, or €6 reduced, in October 2026. Booking ahead is recommended, and the price is worth checking before you go.
- The town's Christmas Market of Nations runs from the second half of November until just before Christmas.
History
The oldest written record of Rüdesheim dates from 1074, and for centuries the town lived from winegrowing and river shipping.

- Timber rafting on the Rhine was part of the town's shipping trade.
- Rüdesheim became a town on January 1, 1818.
- The foundation stone of the Niederwald Monument was laid in 1877. Visitors once reached the monument by cog railway.
- The Upper Middle Rhine Valley, the 65-kilometer stretch of river between Rüdesheim and Koblenz, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
Traveling with Family
Each cable car cabin holds two adults and two children, so a family of four rides up to the Niederwald together.
- A stroller up to 85 centimeters wide goes up in the cabin behind yours, at no charge.
- Dogs travel in the cable car at no extra charge.
- Children pay the reduced price for the 45-minute tour of Siegfried's Mechanical Music Cabinet.
Accessibility
Both stations of the Niederwald cable car are accessible, and the lower station has an elevator to the boarding level.
- Each cable car cabin takes a wheelchair or a rollator up to 85 centimeters wide. Larger wheelchairs and electric wheelchairs cannot be carried.
- The operator of the Rheinstraße landing stages rates them as suitable for passengers with reduced mobility. Ask your cruise line whether the gangway will be step-free on the day.
- Drosselgasse is a narrow lane paved with cobblestones.
