Good to know

What to Expect

The port company bayernhafen runs Regensburg's river cruise berths at the Donaulände, on the Danube.

  • Your cruise line confirms the exact berth. Ask on board how far it is from the Stone Bridge and the cathedral, the two landmarks to steer by.
  • Coaches can pick passengers up directly at the quay.
  • The Tourist Information office at Rathausplatz 4 is open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 6 pm and on Sundays and public holidays from 9:30 am to 4 pm.

Getting Around

Regensburg's buses belong to the RVV network, and one day ticket covers up to five people in the city center.

  • That ticket, the Tages-Ticket Innenstadt, was €3.10 in October 2026. It is valid only in the city-center zone, for as many rides as you like in a day, and is sold in the RVV app, at ticket machines, at advance sales points and on the bus.
  • A single ticket was €3.30 in advance or €3.70 from a regional bus driver. Check the fares before you travel.
  • The excursion boat company Wurm & Noé has a sales pavilion at Thundorferstraße 6, open from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm from April to October. Its trips include a round trip of about 45 minutes and a two-hour tour to Walhalla. Check the return time against your ship's departure.

What to Eat

The Historische Wurstkuchl, beside the Stone Bridge, grills pork sausages over an open charcoal fire and serves them with its own sauerkraut and mustard.

  • The Wurstkuchl opens daily at 10 am and closes at 7 pm from April onward, and earlier from January to March.
  • The Wurstkuchl is shut on December 25 and 26 and on Ash Wednesday.
  • Wahlenstraße and Untere Bachgasse, two medieval lanes in the old town, have many small cafés and restaurants.

Tipping and Money

Germany uses the euro, and major credit cards are accepted.

  • Restaurant bills include tax and service, and a tip of about 10 percent is common.
  • Cash machines at banks work around the clock.

The Cathedral, the Stone Bridge and the Old Town

St. Peter's Cathedral and the Stone Bridge are Regensburg's two main landmarks.

  • The cathedral opens at 6:30 am and closes at 6 pm in April, May and October, at 7 pm from June to September and at 5 pm from November to March. Sightseeing stops during services, and on Sundays and public holidays it starts at 1 pm.
  • The Stone Bridge was begun in 1135 and spans the Danube in stone arches for about 300 meters. For almost 800 years, until 1935, it was the only bridge at Regensburg. Of its three original towers, the one on the city side still stands.
  • The Golden Tower on Wahlenstraße dates from the second half of the 13th century. Rich families built such towers as status symbols, and the city once had more than 60 of them.
  • The Historical Museum, in a former Minorite monastery, is open Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission was €7.50 in October 2026, and entry is free on the first Sunday of each month. Check before you go.

History

From 1663 to 1806 Regensburg was the permanent seat of the Imperial Diet, the assembly of the Holy Roman Empire.

  • The Romans chose this spot, the northernmost point of the Danube, as a boundary of their empire.
  • Medieval Regensburg stood on the trade routes to Italy, Bohemia, Russia and Byzantium, and the old town has kept the extent it reached in the early 14th century.
  • Work on the Stone Bridge began in 1135, and the town hall was built in the middle of the 13th century.
  • UNESCO listed the old town with Stadtamhof in 2006. In 2021 the Roman frontier along the Danube, the Danube Limes, became a World Heritage Site as well.

Traveling with Family

Regensburg offers guided tours for children and a scavenger hunt through the old town.

  • The diocesan museums run a treasure hunt in and around the cathedral.
  • A round trip on the Danube by excursion boat takes about 45 minutes.
  • The Donaupark has a playground, and the city has a small children's and youth farm.
  • The House of Bavarian History is a museum with material on inventions and discoveries from Bavaria.
  • A family ticket for the Historical Museum was €15 in October 2026. Check before you go.

Accessibility

Regensburg Cathedral has had a wheelchair-accessible entrance since 2010, at its northeast corner beside the Eselsturm.

  • The route to that entrance runs through the cathedral garden, where the cobbles have been replaced with large stone slabs. The door opens automatically.
  • Coaches can pull up directly at the Donaulände quay, so an excursion by coach can start beside the ship.
  • The city's map "Barrierefrei durch Regensburg" marks wheelchair-accessible toilets in the old town. Ask for it at the Tourist Information office.
  • Ask your cruise line whether the gangway is step-free at your berth.

Shopping in Regensburg

Wahlenstraße and Untere Bachgasse are two medieval lanes with many small shops.

  • Wahlenstraße is considered the oldest named street in Regensburg, and a passage through an inner courtyard links it to Untere Bachgasse.
  • Most shops in Germany are open Monday to Saturday, typically between about 9 am and 8 pm.
  • Shops in Bavaria close on Sundays and public holidays, though bakeries and shops in train stations are often open.
