Good to know

What to Expect

River cruise ships berth at Nuremberg's passenger harbor at Europakai, on the Main-Danube Canal, where up to 10 ships can tie up at once.

  • The harbor is outside the old town. A taxi takes about 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic. Ask the driver for the fare before you set off.
  • Your cruise line confirms your berth and whether it runs a shuttle coach.
  • Coaches set passengers down at the edge of the old town, at Vestnertorgraben, Grasersgasse or Spittlertorgraben. The main sights are within 15 minutes on foot of those stops.

Getting Around

City buses stop at Rotterdamer Straße, across a bridge from the passenger harbor.

  • Bus 60 runs to the U-Bahn station Röthenbach, and the Hauptbahnhof is the fifth stop from there. Check your route in the VGN app on the day.
  • A single ticket in Nuremberg was €3.90 from a machine in October 2026. The TagesTicket Solo day ticket was €10.60, and the TagesTicket Plus, for up to six people with no more than two of them adults, was €15.50. Check before you travel.

What to Eat

The Nuremberg bratwurst is a small pork sausage seasoned with salt, pepper and marjoram, and the European Union has protected its name since 2003.

  • The sausage has been made in Nuremberg since 1313. It was the first bratwurst to receive the EU's protected geographical indication.
  • The Handwerkerhof, a courtyard of craft shops, has a bratwurst kitchen, a Franconian wine tavern and a gingerbread bakery with a café.
  • The weekly market on the Hauptmarkt, the largest in the city, runs Monday to Saturday from 7 am to 8 pm.

Tipping and Money

A tip of about 10 percent is common in German restaurants.

  • Restaurant bills already include tax and service.
  • Germany uses the euro. Major credit cards are accepted, and cash machines at banks work around the clock.

The Imperial Castle and the Museums

The Imperial Castle is the symbol of Nuremberg, and it is open every day except a handful of holidays.

  • Castle hours are 9 am to 6 pm from April to September and 10 am to 4 pm from October to March, with last entry about an hour before closing. It is closed on January 1, Shrove Tuesday and December 24, 25 and 31.
  • A combination ticket for the whole castle was €10 in October 2026, and under-18s go free. Check prices before you go.
  • The Documentation Center, whose permanent exhibition covers Nuremberg and the Nazi party rallies, is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and at weekends from 10 am to 6 pm. Admission with a media guide was €7.50. Buses 36, 45, 55 and 65 stop at Doku-Zentrum, directly outside its main entrance.
  • The Germanisches Nationalmuseum is one of the largest museums of cultural history in the German-speaking world. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, and until 8:30 pm on Wednesdays, when entry is free after 5:30 pm.
  • The Christkindlesmarkt is held on the Hauptmarkt and Rathausplatz from late November to Christmas Eve. Dates and hours change each year.

History

Nuremberg is first recorded in 1050 as royal property, and by 1254 it had become an independent imperial city.

  • The Hohenstaufen rulers built a large castle on the rock above the town.
  • In 1356 the Golden Bull of Emperor Charles IV named Nuremberg as the place where every newly elected ruler had to hold his first Imperial Diet.
  • Nuremberg accepted the Reformation in 1524. In 1663 the Imperial Diet moved permanently to Regensburg.
  • The Holy Roman Empire was dissolved in 1806, and Nuremberg became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
  • In 1945 almost the whole Imperial Castle lay in ruins, though important Romanesque and late Gothic parts survived, and it was rebuilt after the war.

Traveling with Family

Nuremberg has a Toy Museum, and under-18s enter the Imperial Castle free.

  • The Toy Museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and at weekends from 10 am to 6 pm. It also opens on Mondays while the Christkindlesmarkt is on.
  • Toy Museum admission was €7.50 for adults and €2.50 from age 4 to 18 in October 2026, and a small-group ticket for one adult and up to three children was €8. Check before you go.
  • At the castle, the viewing level of the Sinwell Tower is a climb of 113 steps. At the Deep Well, a camera travels 45 meters down to the bottom and visitors follow it on a screen.
  • The Christkindlesmarkt has a children's section called the Kinderweihnacht.

Accessibility

Parts of the Imperial Castle can be visited without steps, but the upper floor of the Palas, the double chapel and the Sinwell Tower are reached only by stairs.

  • The inner courtyard has step-free access with an automatic door, and the Knights' Hall is reached from the Kemenate by a lifting platform.
  • The upper entrance to the Castle Garden is step-free, with a slope of about 10 percent at its steepest. The lower entrance on Ölbergstraße is historic cobblestone and is not recommended for wheelchairs.
  • Coaches carrying passengers with limited mobility have a special set-down arrangement in Augustinerstraße, in the old town. Ask your cruise line whether its coach uses it.

Shopping in Nuremberg

The Handwerkerhof is a courtyard of craft workshops and shops.

  • The Handwerkerhof shops are open Monday to Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm.
  • They sell tin toys, pottery, leather goods, pewter, wooden toys, glass, candles and gingerbread.
