Good to know

What to Expect

River cruise ships land on the Danube at Melk, and the abbey's own estimate for the walk from its river pier is about 30 minutes.

  • The walk goes along Fährstraße, across the green lifting bridge and through the pedestrian streets of the town center, then up a flight of stairs.
  • Wiener Straße is the way up to the abbey without stairs.
  • Melk has more than one landing stage, so ask your cruise line which one your ship will use and whether it runs a transfer to the abbey.

Getting Around

Melk's railway station is a walk of 10 to 15 minutes from the abbey, and regular trains run to Vienna and St. Pölten.

  • The route from the station leads through the town center to the abbey's main entrance.
  • Regional buses also serve Melk, and the nearest stops are a few minutes' walk from the abbey.
  • Allow more than the half hour for the walk back to the river if you plan to stop in the town on the way.

What to Eat

The Wachau grows apricots, and in summer the thing to try is an apricot dumpling.

  • The Wachau is known for its white wines, grown on steep terraces held in place by dry stone walls.
  • Rustic wine taverns and formal restaurants in the valley both pour the local wine.

Tipping and Currency

In Austrian restaurants and taxis a tip of 5 to 10 percent is normal.

  • Look at the bill first. If a tip is already included, do not pay it again.
  • A tip can be left in cash or added when you pay by card.
  • Austria's currency is the euro.

Melk Abbey

Melk Abbey is open daily from 9 am to 5:30 pm from April through October, with last admission at 5 pm.

  • In winter the abbey keeps shorter hours, and from early January to mid-March visits are by guided tour only. Check the abbey's calendar for your date.
  • Adult admission was €16 in October 2026, and a guided tour added €4. Check before you go. The ticket covers the museum, the Marble Hall, the balcony, the library and the abbey church.
  • Guided tours in English last about 50 minutes. From April to October they start at 10:55 am and 2:55 pm, with a 1:55 pm tour added from May to September.
  • The abbey has 497 rooms and 1,365 windows, and its library holds more than 100,000 books, including 1,800 manuscripts.
  • Allow at least two and a half hours to see the abbey, the church and the park. Photography is not allowed inside.

History

On March 21, 1089, Margrave Leopold II of Babenberg gave the church and fortress on the rock of Melk to Benedictine monks.

  • The abbey's annals and the Melk Song of the Virgin Mary survived a severe fire in 1297.
  • Berthold Dietmayr was elected abbot in 1700 and had the whole complex rebuilt with the master builder Jakob Prandtauer.
  • A fire in 1738 destroyed parts of the monastery and the church towers.
  • The garden pavilion in the abbey park was built in 1747 and 1748 by Franz Munggenast.
  • The abbey first opened to tourists in 1960. The Wachau has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.

Traveling with Family

A family ticket to Melk Abbey was €32 in October 2026 and covered parents with their children up to age 16.

  • The abbey park is open from April to October. Children under 14 must be with an adult there, and the park's terraces and old water basins are not fenced, so keep to the paths.
  • With a stroller, take Wiener Straße up to the abbey. The other route from the river ends in stairs.
  • Check ticket prices on the abbey's site before you go.

Accessibility

Most of the abbey visit is wheelchair accessible, and staff open alternative entrances if you check in at the ticket office in the first courtyard.

  • The inside of the garden pavilion and the mineral collection cannot be reached by wheelchair.
  • The gravel paths in the abbey park can be hard going for wheelchairs.
  • From the river, Wiener Straße is the route to the abbey without stairs. The abbey stands above the town center, so ask your cruise line about a transfer if the climb is a concern.
  • Ask your cruise line whether the gangway at your landing stage will be step-free.
