What to Expect
Coastal-route ships stay in Mehamn for about 20 minutes northbound and 10 minutes southbound, so there is no real time to go ashore.
- Plan to watch the call from the deck. The village lies in a sheltered bay at the southern end of Mehamnfjorden.
- Mehamn is the main village of Gamvik municipality, on the Nordkinn peninsula in Finnmark.
- Daytime highs run from about -2 °C in February to about 15 °C in July, so dress warmly even for a short look outside.
History
People have lived year-round at Mehamn's natural harbor since at least the early 1800s.
- From the 1700s until the Russian revolution of 1917, this coast was part of the Pomor trade, in which northern Norway swapped fish for Russian grain and goods.
- Svend Foyn set up a whaling station here in 1885, one of the biggest in Finnmark in its day.
- Local fishermen blamed the whalers for driving away the fish, and in 1903 their protest, the Mehamn Rebellion, closed the station.
- The protest helped bring in stricter whaling rules across Norway.
- Coastal-route ships have called at Mehamn since the early 20th century, and cod and crab landings still matter to the village.
