Good to know

What to Expect

River cruise ships at Bamberg tie up at Kai 5 in the commercial port, bayernhafen Bamberg, about 25 minutes on foot from the old town.

  • A taxi is the alternative to the walk.
  • By road the old town is about five minutes from the quay, and coaches can stop close to the ships.
  • Your cruise line confirms your berth and whether it runs a shuttle.

Getting Around

Bamberg's city buses are run by Stadtwerke Bamberg, and a single ticket costs less bought online.

  • A single ticket was €2.60 in October 2026, or €2.27 bought online, and €1.30 for a child aged 6 to 14.
  • The TagesTicket Solo, a day ticket for one person, was €5.60. The TagesTicket Plus, for up to six people with no more than two of them adults, was €9.10. Check the fares before you travel.
  • Bus 910 stops at Domplatz, in front of the Historical Museum on the cathedral hill. Check where it starts before you rely on it.

What to Eat and Drink

Bamberg's specialty is Rauchbier, a smoked beer, and the historic Schlenkerla tavern below the cathedral still taps it straight from oak casks.

  • Schlenkerla is first recorded in 1405 and is run by the sixth generation of the Trum family. It is open daily from 10 am to midnight.
  • Its smoked beer is a Märzen of about 5.1 percent alcohol.
  • The market gardeners of the Gärtnerstadt sell fresh vegetables and flowers at their own gates.
  • The rose garden of the Neue Residenz has a café in the courtyard.

Tipping and Money

Cash machines at German banks work around the clock, and major credit cards are accepted.

  • Germany uses the euro.
  • Restaurant bills include tax and service, and a tip of about 10 percent is common.

The Cathedral Hill and Its Museums

Bamberg Cathedral holds the tomb of Emperor Heinrich II and Empress Kunigunde, carved by Tilman Riemenschneider, and the figure known as the Bamberg Rider.

  • The cathedral also contains an altar to Mary by Veit Stoss and the tomb of Pope Clement II.
  • On most days the cathedral opens at 9 or 9:30 am and closes at 6 pm from April to October and at 5 pm from November to March. On Saturdays it closes at 4:30 pm, and on Sundays and public holidays it opens at 1 pm. It is closed to sightseers during services.
  • A daily tour at 2 pm covers the cathedral, the Diocesan Museum and the cloister in 90 minutes. It was €12 with museum entry in October 2026, and under-18s go free. Ask which language the tour is given in.
  • The Neue Residenz is open from 9 am to 6 pm from April to September and from 10 am to 4 pm from October to March.
  • A Domberg ticket, also €12, covers the Diocesan Museum, the Historical Museum and the Neue Residenz. The Diocesan Museum is closed on Wednesdays. Check prices and hours before you go.

History

Bamberg is first named in 902, and in 1007 it became the center of a new diocese.

  • Archaeological finds show that people had settled here by about 1000 BC.
  • In 973 Emperor Otto II gave Bamberg to Heinrich the Quarrelsome, Duke of Bavaria. His son, the later Emperor Heinrich II, built the first cathedral on the site of a castle.
  • The Benedictine monastery of St. Michael was founded in 1015, and the cathedral that stands today was consecrated in 1237.
  • The prince-bishops of Bamberg had their seat in the Neue Residenz until 1802.
  • UNESCO listed the old town in 1993. The World Heritage Site covers 142 hectares.

Traveling with Family

Under-18s get into Bamberg's Historical Museum free, and into the Diocesan Museum free when accompanied.

  • The Natural History Museum is open from 9 am to 5 pm from April to September and from 10 am to 4 pm from October to March, and is closed on Mondays. Admission was €5 for adults and €2.50 for ages 6 to 17 in October 2026. Check before you go.
  • The museum's Bird Hall is presented as a museum within the museum.
  • Ask the Tourist Information office about its city rally and guided tours for children.

Accessibility

Bamberg's old town is spread over seven hills, with old bridges and cobblestones, so plan your routes ahead.

  • The Neue Residenz is rated partly wheelchair accessible. Its first and second floors, including the Imperial Hall, are reached by a lift 135 cm long and 100 cm wide, with a door 79.5 cm wide.
  • Three public disabled parking spaces on Domplatz are about 120 meters from the entrance of the Neue Residenz. The way has slopes of under 6 percent and is partly a smooth wheelchair track and partly cobblestone.
  • The entrance hall of the Neue Residenz is reached step-free through a separate door in the courtyard, opened with a Euro key during opening hours. There is an accessible toilet by the ticket desk.
  • Take a taxi or your cruise line's coach from the quay in place of the walk into town.

Shopping and Markets

Bamberg's weekly market is held on the Grüner Markt, in the pedestrian zone, Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm.

  • The market traders trace their history back to the 11th century, and the stalls sell Franconian fruit, vegetables and regional specialties.
  • The Christmas market is held on Maximiliansplatz through Advent.
  • Shops in Bavaria close on Sundays and public holidays, though bakeries and shops in train stations are often open.
