What to Expect
River cruise ships at Arles use a landing stage near the Pont des Deux Lions, in service since March 2023.
- The landing stage takes two cruise ships up to 135 m long at a time, and has shore power.
- Arles sits on the Rhône just below the point where the river splits in two to form the Camargue delta.
- Your cruise line confirms where your ship ties up and the way into the center.
The Amphitheater and Roman Theater
One combined ticket covers the amphitheater and the Roman theater, and both were open every day in 2026.
- The combined ticket was €9 to €11 in October 2026, depending on the rate. Check before you go.
- Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
- Within 15 days, the ticket gets you the reduced rate at Montmajour Abbey, Tarascon Castle, the Glanum site and the Hôtel de Sade in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
History
The Romans took Arles in 123 BC and built it into an important city.
- In 104 BC the Romans dug a canal linking Arles to the Mediterranean.
- Emperor Constantine I favored the city and built baths here, and sizeable remains of them survive.
- In 395 Arles became the seat of the Praetorian Prefecture of the Gauls, which governed the western part of the Western Roman Empire.
- Arles joined the county of Provence in 1239.
- Vincent van Gogh arrived on February 21, 1888, and made more than 300 paintings and drawings during his time in Arles.
